New To Us 1978 GMC Motorhome!

We bought a 1978 GMC motorhome. It is in really good shape for being 42 years old. It probably in better shape than I am, and we're the same Age!

For those who don't know. GMC designed and built their own motorhome in the early 70's to capitalize on the baby boomer's new found disposable income. The coaches of the time were boxy and rode like trucks...cuz they were! GMC wanted to see what was possible. They rethought the whole concept of a motorhome. It was front wheel drive, to keep the floor low. It was built like an airplane instead of a house on wheels. They used a tandem axle set-up in the rear vs a dually set-up to keep load carrying capacity but not encroach upon the passenger compartment. They used auto leveling air suspension. It was FAR ahead of its time. In my opinion, after having looked at many different brands and styles of motorhomes, its still ahead of its time!

We looked all summer, saw a bunch of garbage, and finally found "our" coach. We bought it from an older gentleman who lived about 75 miles away. He was using it constantly up until we bought it, so its ready to camp. This was important to us as we did not want a two year project just to get it ready for camping.

Here are the pictures from the advertisement.

We pretty much knew it was going to be ours when we got there. We made an offer, he accepted, and we gave him a deposit, with plans to come back after his vacation to pick it up and finalize the deal. That went according to plan and we got it home but not without an adventure! Next post will talk about that trip home and what our plans are.
